Goal Setting for a New Year

As another year comes to a close, it’s that time of year again for goal setting for a new year!  Find a quiet spot, sit down and think about the past year, did you accomplish your goals? Did you set them and forget them or did you set a plan and go out and run after them? Be honest with yourself did you achieve everything you wanted to?  Every year, I take some time to goal set for the new year, I consider what I want to accomplish, and I also consider what I didn’t get to on that ever growing list of goals!

Sometimes the best laid out plans, don’t turn out, no matter how hard you plan for them, but that doesn’t mean you failed either.  Perhaps your goal changed, you had a change of heart, or something completely unforeseen happened, that’s just life. This past year I found myself transplanted from my cold roots in Canada to the sunny sandbox of Dubai!  And with that change of location, a whole new set of goals! Change happens – sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.  It’s how we deal with change that will ultimately determine where we get to!

Setting flexible goals for a new year is the best way to track your progress and ensure that you are moving in the direction and with a new year days away, there is no time like the present to get started!  In today’s post, I am going to take you through how to set your goals!

Realistic and Practical Goal Setting

One thing to remember is that when you set your goals you need to be realistic and practical. But you also need to be very specific and have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. Throughout any fitness, diet or lifestyle journey, whether it is to lose weight and finally get in shape, write your first blog, do your first photo shoot, you may feel overwhelmed at times, you may not want to go to the gym, or have the will power to stick to your diet. If you take the time to set clear and specific goals, and set a standard for what you want to achieve, these goals will provide a constant reminder to stay the course.

Condition Your Mind

In order to have successful goals, you need to condition your mind to the standards you want, and accept nothing less from yourself or those around you. When goal setting consider finding a quiet, comfortable and positive environment, without disturbances or interruptions where you can think about the goals you want to set for yourself over these next 3 months, 6 months and for the next year. If you are very ambitious, you should realize that your goals or your fitness journey will not stop here; it will continue and be a strong proponent of your life moving forward!

Guidelines for Goal Setting

Now to get started on writing those goals, consider the following:

  • Set each goal with a ‘Must’ not a ‘Should’
  • Be specific, realistic and clear
  • Set time for achieving your  outcomes for 3 months, 6 months and 1-year goals
  • Why and What are you setting out to achieve with each goal?
  • Don’t make excuses
  • Focus on adapting a fitness lifestyle – get clear and compelling reason for what you want, where you are and where you want to be
  • Consider your strengths and weaknesses
  • Commit all your goals to paper
  • Review your goals on a regular basis to make sure you are tracking toward the result you want
  • Set small attainable goals that will lead you to bigger goals
  • As you set your goals, consider setting new ones
  • Consider what resources you need to reach your goals?
  • What kind of person must you become to reach these goals?
  • Do you need more discipline or a better attitude?
  • What prevents you from having the things you desire right now?
  • What are the necessary actions you need to perform consistently to reach your goals?
  • Who can you model yourself after that has already achieved what you want?
  • What can you do today to get started?
  • Create an ideal fitness day – what people are involved? What would you do? Where would you train? What would you eat?
  • What is the perfect environment, supplies, and support that you would need to achieve your goals?
  • Take an inventory of what you already have that you’re thankful for and things you’ve already accomplished
